Proper installation is the single biggest factor determining solar street light performance and lifespan. Even the highest-quality light will fail prematurely if installed incorrectly. This guide walks through every step — from site survey to final testing.
Pre-Installation: Site Survey
Before ordering lights, conduct a thorough site survey:
- Solar exposure — Measure daily sun hours. Solar panels need 4-6+ hours of direct sunlight. Use a solar pathfinder or mobile app to map shading from buildings, trees, and poles.
- Pole spacing — Calculate based on light pole height (usually 3-4x pole height between poles for uniform illumination)
- Ground conditions — Check soil type (clay, sand, rock) for foundation design. Rocky soil may need smaller foundations; sandy soil needs deeper ones.
- Cable routing — For split-type systems, plan the underground cable path between solar panel pole and light pole
Step 1: Foundation Preparation
The foundation anchors the pole against wind loads and ground movement. Standard specifications:

Critical tip: Use a template/jig to hold anchor bolts in the correct position during concrete pour. Misaligned bolts are the #1 installation error.
Step 2: Grounding and Lightning Protection
Steel poles act as lightning rods. Install a proper grounding system:
- Drive a 1.5m+ copper grounding rod at each pole base
- Connect the rod to the pole with 10mm² copper wire
- Ground resistance should be < 10Ω (test with a ground resistance tester)
- For areas with frequent lightning, add a surge protection device (SPD) in the controller compartment
Step 3: Light Assembly

The simplest installation — the solar panel, battery, LED, and controller are integrated into one unit:
- Unpack and inspect for shipping damage
- Attach the mounting bracket to the light housing (4-6 bolts)
- Mount the bracket onto the pole top (clamp or bolt-on)
- Adjust the angle: solar panel should face south (Northern Hemisphere) at an angle equal to latitude + 10°
- Torque all bolts to specification (typically 40-60 N·m for M16)
Split-Type Systems
Solar panel and light fixture are separate, connected by cable:
- Mount the solar panel bracket at the top of the pole, oriented for maximum sun exposure
- Mount the light fixture arm at the desired height (6-10m typical)
- Route the solar cable through the pole (internal) or along the outside (conduit-recommended)
- Connect to controller in the battery compartment (usually at pole base)
- Waterproof all connections with heat-shrink tubing and silicone sealant
Step 4: Battery Installation
For split-type systems, batteries may be buried underground (gel batteries) or mounted in a weatherproof box at the pole base (lithium):
- Underground battery box — Dig a hole 300mm away from the pole, install waterproof battery box, backfill with sand for drainage
- Pole-mounted battery — Installed in a lockable compartment at 1.5-2m height for anti-theft
- All battery terminals must have anti-corrosion grease applied
- Connect temperature sensor (if provided) for lithium batteries — prevents charging in freezing conditions
Step 5: Controller Configuration
Before powering on, configure the MPPT/PWM controller:
- Set battery type (LiFePO4 / Gel / Lead-Acid)
- Set lighting schedule (dusk-to-dawn / timer mode / motion sensor mode)
- Set dimming profile (e.g., 100% for first 4 hours, 50% for remaining)
- Set low-voltage disconnect (LVD) — typically 11.5V for 12V systems
- Test all modes before finalizing

- Loose connections — Vibration from wind loosens terminals over time; use spring washers
- No weatherproofing on cable entries — Water ingress kills controllers within months
